What is the ECOBOX?

In many restaurants, hotels, and canteens, customers can take away their meals or leftovers to enjoy later. As a result, a large quantity of single use packages end up in the bin within a short time.

We have an ecological and sustainable solution for you: the ECOBOX!

The ECOBOX is a deposit-return scheme for multiple purposes developed in Luxembourg for transporting meals. Whether it’s at a restaurant, canteen, or for takeaway food, the ECOBOX can be used almost anywhere.

ECOBOX’s multiple use will eliminate many single use packages. This initiative allows for the reduction of volume of waste, because it reduces not only the number of packages but also the quantity of food waste.

This system is very ecological and sustainable, because defective ECOBOXes that are unusable are sent back to the manufacturer and can be reused as raw material for new products.

The ECOBOX is available in two sizes. (500ml and 1000ml)

 

Single use cutlery? NO THANK YOU! Various participating companies are also offering a set of reusable takeaway cutlery for 10€.

Environment and Sustainability

For ECOBOX users

  1. The participating companies are well recognizable by the logo.

  2. In all the participating restaurants, for a deposit of 5€, you can take away your meal in an ECOBOX.

  3. The meal can be consumed later, at home, in the office, or on the road.

  4. The ECOBOX should be washed after use.

  5. At the next visit to the restaurant,

    return the ECOBOX and receive your deposit back

    OR
    exchange the ECOBOX for a newly professionally washed container to take another meal

  6. Defective ECOBOXes can be exchanged for new containers in all participating restaurants. These are then returned to the manufacturer and used as raw material for new products.

For ECOBOX providers

  1. Participating companies are well recognizable by the logo and are listed on ecobox.lu

  2. All providers are stocked with a sufficient supply of ECOBOXes, with a deposit of 5€ for each container. (Minimum supply: 20 items)

  3. Every ECOBOX must be washed professionally before each distribution (dishwasher).

  4. For a deposit of 5€, the customer receives an ECOBOX to take away his or her food at participating facilities. The clean container can be returned after use to a participating restaurant where it will be cleaned professionally once more. The customer picks up the deposit of 5€ or exchanges the ECOBOX and refills it with food.

  5. If the restaurant needs more ECOBOXes, additional orders can be placed. In case of excessive returns, the ECOBOXes will be taken in by the SuperDrecksKëscht® and the restaurant receives the associated deposit costs (5€ per container).

  6. Defective ECOBOXes can be exchanged for new containers by the restaurant. These are returned to the manufacturer and can be re-used as raw material for new products.

As part of the campaign, the consumer will be informed of the correct way to use ECOBOX and the safe and hygienic handling of the food.

Participating companies receive a detailed introduction to the system as well as handling of the ECOBOX and are supervised by participating partners.

The system was coordinated with the health inspection (advised health inspection).
